No more or less useful than any other prepaid debit card. Your regular ATM card will probably work just as well without the fees for setting up the card, loading it, etc. Make sure you investigate those before going ahead. In the rare instance that your bank or credit union does not allow use of their ATM cards in Europe, you could find another bank. In any case, you could always open a separate account with your travel funds in it (it's always wise to have two sources of money, anyway) to avoid having to have your travel money linked with your regular money.
