carrying prescription samples

I've searched and haven't found this exact question. One of my prescriptions is very expensive, and my wonderful doctor gives me samples instead of a prescription. They are in bulky one-week boxes, and I will need to carry 8 of them. Does anyone know if this will work? If I had a note from the doctor?

Thanks for your help!

It might be okay but none of us really knows. Since you're fortunate enough to have a "wonderful doctor", wouldn't it be better to just ask your doctor this question? If she/he thinks you should have a note, it can then be quickly faxed to you. The answer to this kind of question sometimes depends on what the prescription is, your doctor already knows that, and none of us here are very knowledgeable about European law regarding this. For example, even something like melatonin, available over the counter here, is available only by prescription in some European countries. And if you were to have a problem, it might be upon re-entering the US. So, if you want to err on the side of caution, call your doc. Have a good trip!

It seems to me that your Dr. could go ahead and actually write out a prescription and you can take that with you (he HAS prescribed it, after all...). As long as the dosages and drug match, how is anyone going to know if those actual pills were attained using that actual prescription?

Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll talk to the doc, since one of my concrns is the sheer bulk of the meds in the boxes. I'm trying to pack ala RS. And thanks for the tip on melatonin. I was thinking of taking a few along for jetlag.

About the melatonin: although available only by prescription in some European countries (I don't know which ones), we've never had anyone on this forum report a problem with European officials over this. And there shouldn't be a problem re-entering the US with melatonin since it's available over the counter here.

Whether melatonin is actually as effective as some users think it is, that's another question, but you're not asking about that so I won't get into the details--except to mention that there was a recent discussion of that subject here. If you're interested in finding that discussion,

go here and follow the instructions for searching this forum

or let me know and I'll find it for you.
