Carrying on contacts.

I wear disposable contacts that I replace every month. I'll be traveling carry on only and will need to take a four month supply. Should these go in my 1 qt "liquids" bag? Or are these exempt because I have a perscription? I've been looking at the TSA website, but can't seem to find a direct answer. Thanks for the help!

Kara, I suspect you'd be fine taking those in your carry-on, as there's not really enough "liquid" in the small pouches to be a concern. You contact lens solution however should be in the liquids bag. Cheers!

It would be best if you put the lenses and your contact solution in a seperate bag. If you have a prescription for the solution, you can take more than the 3 oz, but you must declare it to TSA when you go through security. If you use over-the-counter solution, just take a 3 oz bottle (or 2) in your 3-1-1 bag, and purchase more after you arrive at your destination (and just put the lenses in your carry-on seperately.

They don't need to be in your liquids bag or any separate bag, for that matter. I would just carry a couple of 3 oz. travel size bottles of solution (or more, if you have room in your liquids bag). They last a lot longer than you think, and that might be all you need. If you need more it is available there.

You are allowed to bring the contacts as well as any over the counter solution necessary. It does not have to be in a 3 oz. bottle or fit into a 1 qt. bag and you can take over 3 oz. If you are bringing in more than the 3 oz, however you must them separately. I do this by putting it in a separate baggie and having it out and available for inspection. The actual wording from from the TSA website: You may bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes. Additional items you may bring include: Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition; Life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products, and transplant organs; Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution, or other liquids; and,
Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions. You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. BUT if the medically necessary items exceed 3 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST to one of our Security Officers at the checkpoint for further inspection.

What Karen said is correct from my understanding. Although I'm in Canada, I think the standards are pretty similar. Contacts and contact lense solutions are considered medically necessary items and are exempt from restrictions. I also wear disposable contacts( once a week) and on a 6 week trip to Europe in 09, packed 6 spare pairs plus some solution and eye drops. I did not pack this stuff in my baggy while going through customs and no questions were asked. Ive been on a couple of flights since where I've had spare contacts and solution packed in my toiletries kit and it has never been a problem...

Great! Thank you so much everyone! I really appreciate it. I was pretty sure they wouldn't actually confiscate my contacts if I didn't pack them right. But with the TSA (and the current general travel environment), I didn't want to take any chances.
