Carrying a daybag in Italy

My existing RS Civitas day bag is wearing out after years of use. I was getting ready to order another one but noticed a bag that's good for IPADs (or in my case a Kindle). What stuck out in the RS description was the reference to it being great "where day bags aren't allowed".
We're heading to Rome, Pompeii, Florence and Siena in 5 weeks. Is it common to find areas where day bags aren't allowed?
Thanks!

I wouldn't say it's common per se, but there are some restrictions on size and, even more so, on bags carried predominantly on the back, especially in Florence and Rome. Read the descriptions of what's allowed or not allowed on the official websites of places you want to visit: they are very precise, often including measurements of allowable items. I purchased a Tom Bihn small café bag for our upcoming VFR Tour next month for this very reason; it will pass muster whereas my Patagonia sling bag probably wouldn't. Buon viaggio!

Thanks Reederman. I'm glad that I had noticed the warning in the bag description on RS shopping. I'll have to check out the bag that you got also.

I'm a Seattlite too though we're living on Whidbey Island now. Born in Seattle but it was much smaller 66 years ago. 🙂

Thanks again !

Many people now use the crossbody bags that sit/rest against your chest/abdomen, which come in various sizes. You should be able to find one that meets your needs. I've been using my canvas satchel for over 10 years now & the only time I had to check it in was when we were heading up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Just as an example, we went to the Doge’s palace and St. Mark’s in Venice this summer. My husband had a regular backpack. I carried this cross body bag: Limited-time deal: G4Free Sling Bag RFID Blocking Sling Backpack Crossbody Chest Bag Daypack for Hiking Travel(Black) https://a.co/d/3nBsGOA

In both places, my husband had to check his bag. I did not.

This was my first time using a cross body bag like this vs. a backpack or crossbody purse. I liked the versatility of being able to wear it on the front or the back. This bag has a water bottle pocket that was big enough for a plastic water bottle. Many bags I tried have pockets that are too small.

Thanks much to both of you! Your suggestions for getting a cross body bag are great! I ended up buying the RS bag for IPAD which can be worn cross body, will fit my Kindle fire and was very similar to the bag Reederman mentioned but was about 1/2 the price.

I love this forum! 😁
