This will be my first time flying Easy Jet from London to Barcelona. Has anyone taken Rick Steves' 21-in Roll-Aboard on that airline as a carry-on? Their guideline for a carry-on is 56x45x25 cm, while RS's Roll-Aboard mesaures 22x14x9 in (55.9x35.6x22.9 cm). When I booked my ticket online, they suggested I paid for my check-in luggage at the same time or it would cost double at the airport. Since this is the only piece of luggage I will be bringing, I am hoping this qualifies as a carry-on and do not have to pay at the airport for double the cost. Or should I pay up now to avoid dispute at the airport? I am sure the dimension is different if they include the wheels and the grab handle.
Kathy, According to the EasyJet rules for hand luggage that you posted above, the RS Roll-Aboard should theoretically fit. However, if it's overpacked and "bulging", it may not fit the sizing frames. In my experience, they will check items in the sizing frames. It's a bit of a "gamble". If you get to the boarding gate and they decide it's over the limit, you'll get nicked with a £40 surcharge. Note that they allow ONE carry-on item only, so if you're carrying a Purse or other item, it will have to be placed inside the Roll-Aboard. Good luck and happy travels!
The wheels and handle are consider part of the bag and everything has to fit inside the box. Second, a large part of these airline's revenue comes from additional fees so they are very interested in having you check your bag and make extra money. You have to determine if it is worth a gamble.,
Kathy, One note to add. I'll be using EasyJet again this year and I know absolutely that I'm going to have to check my main Pack. I paid for extra weight above their normal checked baggage limit, in order to have a "safety margin". It's much cheaper doing it at the time of booking rather than at the airport on the day of the flight if they find it's over the limit.
Be aware also, that Easy Jet consider your purse or hand bag as we call it, to be carry on luggage!!!!! Leave room to put it in your allowed one carry on bag and then take it out when you get on the plane. How ridiculous is that???!!!
"How ridiculous is that" Not ridiculous at all if you do not have to take a purse to Europe.
Thanks for everyone's response and great advice. I'm definitely going to pre-pay and check my "carry-on". Hopefully they are not notorious for losing bags too. I have always flown BA direct from Washington state and changed plane at Heathrow on BA. Only this time I am deciding to take advantage of a "discounted" airline. After adding up the extra fees (checked bag, 2.5% charged on credit card booking) it is not much cheaper than BA but with added inconvenience (departing from Gatwick). Lesson learned!
Hi Kathy, I flew from Rome to Malta - return to London on Easyjet. In Rome the folks were really strict with the bags. My RS bag just fit. I had to put it in their "TEST" rack wheels first (pushed the bag back as far as I could) then put the top half of the bag in the rack. It fit! From Malta to London nobody checked anything. Barcelona - fun! Susan
