Carry-on luggage guidelines . . .

Just read the carry-on luggage guidelines for Lufthansa and I was a little taken aback. For economy class they state 22"x16"x8", 18 lbs.. I haven't flown this airline since luggage fees came into play. Does anyone have recent experience regarding strictness with carry-ons with this airline? Guess the good old days of keeping a duffle slung over my shoulder from the parking lot to the plane's cabin are over?

Our experience with Lufthansa is that they are more likely to check for size rather than weight. A couple of years ago we stood in a checkin line and watch wheeled bag after wheeled bag being rejected. Nothing was weighed but they were hard on the wheeled carryon.

Stephen,

I flew with Luftansa in June from Milan-Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Vancouver, and was never questioned about my carry-on items, nor did they weigh them. I was carrying a small (but well stuffed) Daypack) and a medium sized Camera bag. I checked my large Backpack as there's no way it would have been accepted for carry-on.

I suspect that if a bag looks like it might exceed either the size or weight limits, they'll have a closer look at it.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, we like to travel light - but not quite that light!!! Guess we need to invest in two regulation size carry-on luggage + one piece to check - darn!

I have flown to Europe on Lufthansa twice in the past few years with a rolling case within regulation sizes. Each time they insisted on weighing the bag and both times, it had to be checked. My travel partners had RS backpack non rolling bags and they were never questioned!

Lufthansa is on the strict side, for a European airline. I've only flown them once in recent years, from Seattle, where they were weighing carry-on rolling bags but not my non-rolling compact backpack. Is your duffle bag within the size rules? If so, you might try a test packing and see if you can get within the weight limits.
