Carry On Luggage/Bags - Air France

I will be flying Air France from the U.S. to Rome. I read the Air France website - it mentions the allowance of 1 carry on bag (planning to take my rolling bag) and 1 accessory bag like a handbag. I have never flown with a backpack before - but since I am not planning on taking a purse, would a backpack generally be considered as a second accessory bag? I was hoping to buy one and it would be of a size suitable for storing under the seat in front of me. Thoughts?

I think you should be fine with a backpack. When I travel I take a backpack, carry-on-size suitcase, and a daybag. On my latest trip I flew Continental and their rule sounds like Air France's - they allowed 1 carry-on bag and an accessory. I stuffed my daybag into my backpack and got through check-in and security just fine without having to check anything. My backpack is an L.L. Bean school backpack (no product-pushing here, just stating the brand so you have an idea of the size) and it fits under the seat with room to spare.

It depends on the size of the backpack. Many airlines feel a personal item should be less than 35 linear inches (L x W X H).

so excuse my ignorance, please - the math on that is derived by the sum of the inches of L x W x H? Thanks again

Sorry, I had a cocktail while writing my previous post so I saw the "+" tilted.

Frank II, I suspected as much...;-)...[but yes, most of us 'say' "9 by/x 13 by/x 21"...]................Terri, if your 'personal item' is no larger that a notebook computer bag, your rolling bag is 9+13+21, and the two bags together weigh less that 26 lbs, you should be within guidelines. AND you're less likely to attract attention if your bags don't look stuffed......Have some gelato for me!

Thanks - yes it's roughly the same size as a computer bag - it's a small backpack - not quite as small as the RS Civita daypack, but close - I measured it - it comes in right around 36 linear inches. The Air France site doesn't seem to define the size of the "personal bag" Thanks again
