Will any larger sedans have enough room to carry 4 medium size suitcases in the boot, or will I need an estate car? (I will be in Scotland.) Looking into this, it appears that something like an Octavia or Mondeo might work. Thanks!
4 adults and 4 luggages? It’s gonna be tight if doable at all. We had 2adults and 2 teenagers and we ended up with a minivan for us and all our luggage. Estate cars sound good but your luggage can never safely be locked in the trunk/boot. It’s always bag there in view of any would-be thief passing by. Yes there’s a cover that closes lays on top of it to try and conceal it, but it does no good if you have so many bags that it won’t lay down flat and conceal it.
My Wife and I rented a car in London for our 4 week drive tour of Wales and England. I did a lot of research on the cars that had room in the trunk (boot in Britain) for two large airline check and two carryon suitcases. It was amazing how few vehicles that were available that could handle that. I didn't want to leave a suitcase in the back seat of the car since, sometimes we would be touring and someone would be tempted to break into the car.
I did find a suitable car, but of course the car rental that I picked was Europcar and they never guarantee the exact car, just one in a class. The car we had reserved was OK, but not the one in the same class. Also, Europcar didn't have one with a navigation system that I needed. They wanted 20 GBP per day for a GPS (absurd). I wound up having to upgrade to a higher class and paid about double for the car that I had reserved.
I had previously rented a car from Thrifty in England a few years before and had no such problems with them, in fact, they upgrades us without extra charge.
Since we were on vacation for 6 weeks (4 weeks in Britain and 2 weeks on the cruise back to the USA) we needed the large suitcases.
With four persons, your luggage will be harder to manage. However, you will have more persons to split the cost.
I am unfamiliar with the cars you mentioned, but did check out the Octavia on the internet. It appears to be a descent sized sedan. However, I am sure it won't take four large airline checkable suitcases. You need to do more research and determine what the car you pick will have for trunk space and control the size and number of suitcases.
