When travelling with a 5 year old in London, how does this child ride in a taxi? Does the taxi provide a car seat for the child? My granddaughter is petite and, of course, here in the States is still required to be in a car seat. Are there similar requirements for a taxi in London? Thanks.
This may sound weird, but you don't usually use a car seat in a taxi. I think the driver would look at you funny. Usually you just hop in and go. If you're lucky, there will be a seatbelt. One cool feature of London taxis is that you can often roll a stroller right into the car instead of having to take the baby out and collapse it, but of course your granddaughter is too old for that!
Have ridden in probably a hundred or more taxis over a period of years in U.S. and international cities, especially NYC and London, mostly while traveling for business. Have never seen a car seat. Might be possible to request/pay extra for one if you were to hire a private car service.
Children over 3 can legally travel in taxis and private hire vehicles in the UK in the rear wearing an adult seat belt. If you aren't happy with this then you could try requesting a car with a seat as suggested above - or ultimately you are likely to end up travelling some other way.
