Car rental Question, One way trip to Italy, Credit Card Car Insurance will cover that?

Normally, credit card insurance cannot cover rental in Italy.

But If I rent a car from other country such as Germany and drive to Italy, the CC insurance can cover that?

Who knows?

Thanks

It depends. I'm renting a car in Germany in December and dipping down into the Dolomites before ending in Germany again. I always rent from gamut.com and use my AMEX coverage. I couldn't rent a BMW or other luxury car and have coverage in Italy, but I could with other types of cars. (I'm getting a full-size Skoda wagon.) You just have to check with your rental company.

Like Ruth, I used AMEX when renting a car from Frankfurt, down into Italy and back to Frankfurt. In 2010 AMEX covered the vehicle while in Italy. They DID NOT provide coverage if I were to rent in Italy.

In Italy CDW purchased from the rental company is mandatory. The good news is that it's cheaper than in most countries, which makes me think the government has a say so in pricing. One of the big problems in Italy is theft.
The rental company may automatically add personal property insurance--in case someone breaks in and takes your suitcase. Turn down that coverage, as it's a rip.

Your credit card probably would offer some protection for Germany and most European countries outside of the old Soviet countries and many exclude Northern Ireland. People don't realize that the credit card's Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is secondary to your main auto insurer coverage "back home." You might want to check with your regular insurance agent to see if you're covered, and look up the terms of your credit card online.

It sounds like your trip may include leaving the car in Italy when you are done. Are you aware that most companies charge a hefty drop fee for renting and returning in different countries?

Ask AmEx. Ask your other credit card companies.

"Who knows?" is probably the best answer you will get here. :-)

Talk to first your Credit card company and try and get the number of the company handling the insurance, and talk to them. It varies greatly by credit card, so any answer on here likely would not apply to you. Further, if someone did rent as you are suggesting and had no issues, then that really does not answer your question, only an accident or damage will truly tell you if you are covered and to what extent.

That aside, I consider CC coverage to have a risk, yes, I use it in the states, I have the premium AMEX coverage I will use sometimes internationally, but I often just take the no deductible CDW just as peace of mind, ty[ically a reasonable price to pay for that. I find when you try to get by as cheap as possible, you often get burnt and it costs you more in the end.

And some credit cards stress that their auto rental insurance is PRIMARY, not secondary to your regular auto insurance.

But as noted, you need to get this specific question answered by your specific card company. And then confirm back in writing to the company what (representative's name) told you on (conversation date)

Yinningl, did you catch JenC's warning about one-way rentals? The drop-off charge can be $500 or more, in addition to the basic cost of the rental.

You better check what the fee would be to rent on one country and drop the car in another. In my experience, I've been quoted in the neighborhood of 600-800 Euro for this.
