Car rental age 70

I will be traveling in Germany and Austria this year and , although I am aware of public transportation options, having lived in Germany, am considering renting a car for reasons of convenience and ability to reach out of the way locations. However, this year I reach the age of 70, which can present problems being able to rent a car due to age. Is anyone aware of specific rental agencies where this won’t be an issue? I have rented fromAuto Europe in the past and ran up against this limitation last year when trying to add a friend as a second driver in Portugal.

If you will be using thee car for three weeks or longer, the simple solution is to lease. The only age requirement is that drivers be 18+ and additional drivers are free. The only drawback is the pick up and drop off fees outside of France as as opposed to no fees inside of France. We have solved that problem by starting and ending our trips in Paris which we think of as an agreeable .inconvenience

I'm not aware of that many rental companies with an age limit of 70. I know there are a couple of agencies with 75 yr limits. Have you checked any rental agencies? That's the only way to know for sure if they have age limits. You might check some consolidators like Gemut or Auto Europe, they work with multiple rental agencies.

Bottom line: you must declare the age of the drivers when you reserve the car, so that's when you should know. Per Rick's summary, the issue is more country-specific than company specific. Although I see we would also not have worried about Portugal; hmmm.

Drivers over 70 may have trouble renting in the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Greece, Northern Ireland, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey; drivers over 80 may have trouble in Denmark. If you're over 69, you may be required to pay extra to rent a car in the Republic of Ireland, where the official age limit is 75 (although some rental companies will rent to those ages 76–79 if they provide extensive proof of good health and safe driving). If you're considered too young or too old, look into leasing, which has less stringent age restrictions. (If you're traveling to Ireland, the closest leasing option is in London.)

Auto Europe says, "...some rental companies will charge extra for drivers over the age of 75."

Thank you for your prompt replies. I won’t be renting for three weeks or more, so leading is not an option for me. I wasn’t aware that different countries within the EU had different requirements and had assumed what I was told by Auto Europe when renting in Portugal last summer applied across the board. Looks like I won’t have any problems renting, at least for the present. I have sone firming up of plans to do before I undertake the actual rental arrangements but won’t be worrying in the meantime. Thanks.

I traveled to Germany with a family member who was 70. When he tried to rent the car he was denied because of his age. He called the rental company and spoke to a supervisor. He explained that he had lived in Germany, was very familiar with the cities we were visiting and knew how to drive carefully on the Autobahn. They ended up letting him rent it. This was about 8 years ago so things may have changed. It's worth a try though since you lived in Germany. Good Luck
