If so how? Should payment be in currency with such an unknown group? We are going on a Norwegian Lines Cruise ship and wonder if the local guides can be trusted to do both excursions in one day. The ship excursions are quite high in price, and we would like to skip these since we are used to traveling in the region. Any suggestions are most appreciated.
I don't know. It took us all day from Naples to see Pompeii. I guess you could do it if you just wanted to take a quick peek at Pompeii or just drive by it.
I spent an entire day in Capri - it was a little more, you could do it all after breakfast until mid afternoon.
It took us a day for Pompeii.
Kate, while it might be feasible to see both locations in one day with careful planning, I doubt that you'd have enough time to really appreciate either place. I was in both Pompeii and Capri in May and spent the better part of a full day exploring Capri. The guided tour of Pompeii took about two hours, and with waiting and travel times for the train, the entire visit took at least four hours.
I suppose if you just want to have a "quick look", a day excursion wlll suffice?
I wasn't sure who you were referring to as an "unknown group", so can't offer any suggestions?
Happy travels!
Kate,
You don't say what port your ship will be stopping at or what time you will be able to disembark and by when you must return. The cruise ship prices are definitely higher, but they elimiate the need to arrange for transportation to/from the sites, entrance fees, and any transportation at the site. Plus, they will make sure you fit everything into the amount of time you have at that port and return to the ship before it sails. If you don't want to do the leg work to plan all this yourself the cost may be worth it. We have cruised several times and rarely use their excursions anymore. But, if they have a combo package that includes both sites it might be worth it. That said, if your port is Naples, then you might try one of these 2 routes: 1.From the Port of Naples take a cab to the train station and board the Circumvensuvian train bound for Pompeii, after exploring there, reboard the train for Sorrento, go down to the port in Sorrento and take the ferry to Capri, take the ferry back to Naples / 2. Ferry to Capri, then to Sorrento, train to Pompeii and then back to Naples. I don't know if there is a ferry to Pompeii but that would be faster. Also, there are fast and slow ferry boats and cost is relative, and the boats are more frequent early and late in the day. All the transportation would have to be well planned ahead of time and you would be spending as much or more time in transportation as in seeing the sights. If you can disembark by 8am and don't have to return until 5 or 6 it might be worthwhile. Perhaps you might want to do one or the other and then enjoy a leisurly Italian lunch or dinner. I think each site, including transportation would take a day to see it and enjoy the experience.
Yes you can.
Greg
If you try to do both, you will not do justice to either site. If you have limited time, pick one and enjoy it to the fullest!
