After all the discussions about avoiding ATM fees I thought about opening a travel-checking account with CapOne to save money. I know the CrediCard has no fees for Europe (neither the 1% nor 2% Visa/MC). But it seems for ATM transactions - there is still a small fee (albeit less than my BofA). Just thought Id look for some quick feedback from current users on how they liked using their CapOneATM in europe = and what fees they did get charged from this past year? thanks in advance! (PS - i checked the archives - but they were a bit dated)
I get charged a couple of dollars per transaction. Each time I use an ATM, I'll pull $400 worth of the local currency. That way the fees don't add up to a whole lot. I pay cash for little stuff and use my credit card for hotel and tickets so that I leave emergency money available in my checking.
Thanks Brad - Ive been trying to do the same thing with my existing BoA ATM and CreditCard. After a few Euro trips now I though maybe I can save the 80-90$ in forgein fees (atm/cc) if I used Cap One for both as well! the 2-3% adds up!
Your Bank of America ATM card is absolutely free of any charges with ATM's of BNP (in France), Deutsche Bank (in Germany), Barclays (in the UK) and others...
Right - it was great for Germany ATMs... so far - no partnerships in CH, Spain, or Scandinavia yet! The 3% CC use was still there regardless!
I use a Capital One credit card when traveling, because there are no fees. For ATM withdrawals, though, I just use my regular ATM card from my local credit union -- no fees there, either.
I was told by CapitalOne that the is no fee to use debit card as long as I use an ATM with the Plus sign. but there may be a fee from the ATM provider.
