Capital One card

To the best of my knowledge, Capital One does not charge extra for any of their cards. We have the card that provides cash back. We have not incurred any extra foreign currency conversion fees. FYI, be prepared for a long wait for approval of a new card. It took a couple weeks for them to approve us.

On the Capital One website there is a "Disclosures" tab for each of their cards that will indicate if there is a fee. I got the "No Hassles" card and it, at least, specifically says there is no foreign transactions fee. I had the card within 10 days of applying.

The No Hassle Cash Rewards definitely doesn't charge a fee, I recently bought some flights using it and the conversion rate was fantastic. Plus there you get 1% cash back and even a 25% bonus on your cash back at the end of the year!

I, too, have applied for a CapitalOne No Hassles card on the phone, and they told me no fees. I haven't seen it in writing anywhere on their website, but was told that it would be in the booklet that comes with the new card in the mail.

As for the 3% cash advance stuff - yes that is if you use it to get cash, not if you use it to charge something. I charged several flights and checked it out and I was definitely not charged anything extra. Great deal, silly to travel with any other card really! As for getting cash, I think ATM cards are probably a better idea; you wouldn't want to use a credit card to get your cash, just like you wouldn't want to do it here either.

I always call Capital One before I leave to be sure the fees haven't changed on my card. I had an MBNA card (collected miles) and suddenly their "no fee" changed to 3%. Fortunately I saw that change before I used it overseas.
