We cruise quite a bit and enjoy it, usually in combination with a land trip. I suspect that new environmental rules will push up the cost of cruising. Also, since many cruise ships operate in excess of 20 years, it will take much time for the older, less environmentally safe ships to be eliminated from service.

Excellent news! Hopefully all the other destinations currently being ruined by these obscene behemoths will follow suit.

I have no objection to people spending days or weeks at a time on a huge ship being entertained, wined and dined, I'd just rather they stayed out at sea to do it.

Note that this is not a ban on cruise ships per se. It is a ban on those that do not respect the EU cap on sulfer in the fuel (0.1 % sulfur is the maximum). According to the article, the Baltic ports have already adopted this policy. Other Mediterranean ports may follow.

Cruise ships that comply with the cap can still dock at Cannes.
