Canadians .. suggests for long term insurance

Hi, I have a friend who is going to europe for a year( under a Youth Visa ) ,, hes a chef and will be working in kitchens in France, Spain and possibly Italy.

He is wondering what is a good company for long term medical insurance.. so far hes had a quote for 1600.. I have no idea if thats standard or not as longest we have gone has been 6 weeks.

Anyone (Canadians ) have a travel insurance company they recommend.. we usually just use whoever from BCAA

Thanks.

The other thing I would look into is any alumni insurance providers that may be available though his college/university /culinary school

If he has some sort of sponsoring agency or facilitator he can ask how far his provincial health insurance extends. In my very limited experience of OHIP in Ontario, the scheme provides reimbursement after the fact, and then only on the provincial scale rather than actual costs. There may be time limits. He can also ask whether he qualifies for local insurance if he is working legally under that visa. An insurance broker in Canada can connect to policies from the big insurance companies: his family agent probably can perform this service.

You might have a look at Lonely Planet travel insurance. They offer some pretty comprehensive plans for young people.

World Nomads insurance - designed for long-term travellers initially. We're using it for youth tour insurance this summer. I read every word in 4 different policies and this was both the most comprehensive and the cheapest.

All EU states have a health insurance system - if he is working legally he will be required to join it.

World Nomads.ca, 1 Year for 19-24 year old $850 to $950 Canadian, the three countries you mention.
I've used World Nomads the last couple of trips.
