Canadian iphone users - Anyone unlocked their phone?

Just bought a FIDO network iphone. Any Canadian owners tried to unlock their phone? Care to share how? Yes, I've read the posts about leaving iphone behind, but am curious about other's experiences.

Kathleen,

You might do a Google search on "IPhone unlocking", as I'm sure you'll find lots of information on the subject. I've never checked into this, but the information I've seen so far indicates this is not as easy a process as other GSM phones.

There's no reason to leave the IPhone behind, as you could certainly "roam" with this on your FIDO plan. Be sure to check their web site so that you have a clear idea of the rates!

You might want to switch off the data portion though, and limit yourself to text and voice as data roaming can be VERY expensive. Again, check with FIDO on the rates.

I use a "regular" Motorola GSM Phone and always travel with this in Europe, using roaming (Rogers). My phone is unlocked, but so far I haven't seen any need to buy local SIM cards. If one is travelling in multiple countries, the Euro networks also charge for "roaming" when users venture outside the country where the SIM is based. At least when roaming with my home operator, the rates are reasonably consistent regardless of which country I'm in. The rates do vary somewhat though, and are especially pricey in Russia and similar countries.

Happy travels!

Ken,

How did you get Rogers to unlock your phone? I called a couple of times before we left and couldn't get anyone who'd even heard of the idea...was it expensive? I just roamed with mine and used it once when we couldn't find a payphone, I'm afraid of the bill that has yet to come!
