This may qualify as the dumbest question ever posted. My husband has celiac disease, and in order to assure the safety of his food we need to line pans and other cookware that are not dedicated gluten free pans with parchment so the food is not cross contaminated. We are staying in apartments and doing a lot of cooking. Thanks in advance for not mocking me for what I realize is a silly question! :)
Sue, I am sorry that you have to even worry about people mocking you for asking a question. I value people who just answer the question without judgement! Planning ahead to stay healthy is just smart planning and good judgement. Your husband is lucky to have you.
It's not a dumb question! It sounds quite important. I don't know about the rest of Europe, but you can definitely buy parchment paper in the UK, in most grocery stores. I have a roll of it in my cupboard ;)
In Germany it is called "back papier" or baking paper. If you tell us where you are going, other people can help you with the translations.
I guess a destination would have helped. We will be in the UK, Italy, Switzerland and France (specifically Paris.) I could take some along, but with one carry on bag per person for a 45 day trip we are trying to cut back on things we can buy there!
The French LOVE parchment paper. How else would they make the pastries?
In the UK it would be baking paper. Can find it anywhere and everywhere, any grocery store or probably even some corner stores. Very common

Sue, that's NOT a stupid question. It's a very good question and being asked for an important reason! At least it's a unique question! If you scroll through here, you'll see where adult diapers and other medical issues are brought up. People on here are pretty nice and sensitive about this stuff...
Hi Sue, my other half is celiac, so I know what you are talking about, however I would say that I would just scrub the pans well in the sink, and draw the line at that. However, if you are looking for baking paper, in Britain you need to look for baking parchment. If you can't find that, then cooking foil, is in every corner store, and will work just as well. If you need any info about gluten free food or shopping in the UK, please ask away, I have been doing it for the last 8 years, so I know most dodges!
This website might be useful to you and to anyone else traveling in Germany, Austria or Switzerland if you are looking for products, translations or info about glutenfree meals, etc.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. And I haven't seen any of the latter ones here in the thread ;-)
I actually had this question when I moved from Europe to Canada. It was so normal for me to use it in Germany or France but it was very difficult fo find here. Used waxed paper first until I realized it would just smoke out my kitchen if placed in an oven ... After a while I finally found parchment paper in specialty cooking stores, today it's much more common.
In German speaking countries look for "Backpapier", in France look for "papier de cuisson"
I've seen silacon sheets that you put over a regular sheet or pan to make it nonstick---would something like that be useful? The one I saw was very thin and you wash and reuse it.
Hallo Sue, another word for parchment paper in Germany is Pergament Papier. Have a wonderful trip und Gute Reise, Karin
Just to throw in the Italy info: It is sold in Italy. Check out a larger grocery store where the paper plates and napkins are. I don't know the word for it, but if you take a little into the store to show the store clerk I'm sure they can help you.
