If you're talking about visiting the main Casino, and not the newer ones that have opened in the past few years, there is a dress code (jacket required at night), an admission fee, and you must have your passport (no photocopies). Jeans are not allowed. The main casino is the one to see. The others, well, close your eyes and you won't know if you're in Monte Carlo or Atlantic City.

If you are serious about packing light leave the jeans at home. They are heavier, bulkier, warmer and take longer to dry than other fabrics.

Yes, you can wear jeans to the Vatican. Just no shorts, and no bare shoulder shirts. I suppose it depends on the casino in Monte Carlo, however, as I have not been there, cannot comment. Maybe their websites have info on the dress code.

Winny, You shouldn't have any problem wearing Jeans at the Vatican, but make sure that your shoulders are covered. Those wearing sleeveless tops can expect a harsh response from the Guards (I know, as I've seen what can happen to those that forget). There IS a dress code at the famous Casino in Monte Carlo which usually includes Jacket and Tie, so I very much doubt that Jeans would be allowed. I can't remember if the dress code only applies at certain hours, or whether this is in effect at all times. The famous Casino in Baden-Baden allows more informal dress during the day, but enforces a dress code at night when the Casino is operating. You didn't say when your trip would be taking place, but I tend to agree with the others that Jeans are not always the most comfortable choice for travel in hot weather. They're also not the easiest to wash in a hotel room sink and take forever to "air dry". Cheers!

The last time we were at the Casino was about 3 years ago. We went in the afternoon, and you can dress more casually then than would be allowed in the evening, but I did not see any jeans. We wore khaki-type pants and I had on a nice knit top. My husband had a buttoned shirt but no tie or jacket. We wouldn't have been admitted in this attire in the evening.

Thanks to everyone's replies. We are going to be there from 3/27/2012 to 4/1/2012 so the weather is still chilly. I am hoping we can skip the jacket, pants and tie etc..

The Vatican rule is no exposed shoulders or knees (I also assume no bare midriffs or obscene t-shirts but haven't seen it stated). You don't need to be formal at all. T-shirt, flip-flops and yoga capri pants are fine - as long as your knees and shoulders are covered.

Thanks everyone:) We are going for 21 days so we are bringing the Jeans for sure and planning not to wash them. it will be needed in Amsterdam and Prague because it is colder over there. We are bringing one 21" Hand pulling and one backpack. We are going to skip all the nice dressy stuffs. Thanks for all the tips and I will let all of you know how that goes when we are back:) Winny

I know Rick doesn't recommend packing jeans, but when travelling during spring, fall or winter, I think jeans are a must-have, a travel basic. You can dress them up or down and wear them almost anywhere. As far as washing them, I would never consider trying it in a hotel sink. But how often do you really need to wash your jeans? Unless you're out hiking in them, working up a sweat, you can wear a pair of jeans several times (assuming you wear underwear)! Besides, many hotels offer a laundry service. For a two-week trip, I only do laundry once (except underwear which I wash by hand). I never travel with more than a 21" roller board and a small backpack. You'll need at least two (maybe even three) pairs of shoes. When traveling in fall or spring, I never bring shorts, skirts or dresses; a pair of black dress pants and black leggings work for evenings with ballet flats. Other travel must-haves for this time of year: a jean jacket, rain/all purpose jacket and long sweater. Plus solid color long-sleeved tee shirts to mix and match and a couple of scarves to dress them up with. Light-weight yoga pants make perfect sleepwear.

I must agree that a non-summer vacation can most certainly include a pair of jeans. I have never traveled without a pair and don't recall being hampered by them. For a ten-day trip, I would probably wear my jeans 3-4 times and don't wash them (there really is no need). Have fun!

Black yoga pants,, the plain ones with no designs or colored waistbands.. They are easy to wear, lightweight, wash in a sink, and if you wear a top that covers the waistband and decent footwear then they can look like dress pants,,with no ironing needed. More practical then either jeans or dress slacks!

The only time I would travel without jeans would be mid summer. Maybe some people have not shopped for jeans lately but there are many lighter weight jeans available now and they pack easily. They can be dressed up with a nice jacket, top, scarf, etc. I can't imagine why they could not be worn several times without washing.

I may have the wrong end of the stick but it seems that the discussion is veering a little into general travel philospophy and if jeans are good when the actual OP is jeans in Monaco. I think they might make the OP uncomfortable in the settings and Grand Casino in Monaco.

BTW, it was about 25 degrees C in Rome and Monaco today - I keep widgets on my desktop - which is just short of 80 degrees F.

I would take a pair of jeans and a nicer pair of pants for a three week trip. I have a black cotton sport coat that goes with both. If you want to be less "touristy" dress a little nicer. Plan on finding a laundry after a week.
