Can the RS bag be TOO big??

I've read all the posts I can find, and there doesn't seem to be any doubt that the RS convertable carryon is an awesome bag. It can carry everything we need for long trips, and do so very well. Can it ever be TOO big? Does it present a problem if you use it for shorter trips, say a business trip of 3 or 4 days? Does it have too much room?

My small leather carryon is on it's last legs, and I can't decide if I need another small bag for business or if the RS bag would work for that as well as leisure travel.

It's not that big but wait until you get it to decide.

BTW, Roy, did you get the replies I sent to your private message?

Thanks Frank, and yes I just did. I wrote back. The optional "single shoulder strap" is included from Kiva if you buy the RS bag from either Amazon or Luggagepoint, and they both ship free.

Great Question! I was wondering about this. I just got the convertible carryon and had to travel from MA to Phoenix this past weekend, so I thought I would try it out, before I go to Europe this summer.

I LOVED IT! It was the perfect size for a weekend trip and because it was so flexible, I added a few things on the way back. I didn't find it too big at all. I'd be surprised if you packed for a weekend and found it too big. I also loved being able to reach things in the outside pocket so easily while I was walking through the airport (like my book and a snack to grab out before I put it in the overhead compartment on the plane). It was great!

I think that one of the advantages the RS bag has over others are the compression straps. There are two inside, to help hold your things when the bag's less then full. And then there are four on the outside, and if the bag is less then full you can just "shorten" the bag, so there's just not any excess room for things to move around!

yes - the compression straps can synch it down inside and out. They can get heavy if you over fill them - thats probably the main issue people have is that they are roomy enough for that to happen. If a small carry on (say 2 cubes big) is all you need then take that for biz trips. Its just nice knowiing you have a light back that can get bigger if needed. Its a bit big for a "day pak" running around all day if thats what you mean.

Hello Roy. The R.S. Convertable carry-on bag has a length of 21 inches. The airline Allegiant Air requires carry-on bags to have a maximum length of 19 inches. And I think some airlines for flights within Europe require a maximum length of 19 inches for carry-on bags in airplanes. And, some airlines do measure the size of carry-on bags.

My wife and I just returned from a 12 day trip in Italy and we both loved the RS convertible carry-on. The waist belt helped my wife spread the load off her shoulders a bit. My only wish is that the compression straps on the outside went over the main zipper to help compress the bag even more.

Frank, thank you. I will check into the other one you mentioned. There are four of us and we're all trying to go lighter than our other 29" bags.

While hubby and kids can do the backpack type, I need the wheels.

I am now looking at this bag.

We will fly from the US on Continental, but from London to Rome we will be using BA, then from Rome to Paris (Vueling). Will this bag be considered a carry-on for these airlines or will they check it?

Eli, the bag is on sale for 20% off this week.

You might also want to look at the Ebags Weekender.

Since the bags have no internal frame, the can be "molded" to fit the sizers.

The Ebags Weekender comes in a wheeled version as well. I have both.

Frank, do you mean that you have both the RS and the one from Ebags?

I have both Ebags: The Weekender and The Weekender Wheelie

I used to own the old RS convertible and the old RS wheeled bag. I recently sold the RS wheeled bag. I like the Ebags roller better because it doesn't have a molded shell and has cinch straps on the outside, hidden backpack straps with web belt.

A few people seem to complain about the handle. I am 5' 5". Are you very tall Frank?

By the way, when we take luggage as carry-on (my daughter actually asked this), are we still allowed a smaller backpack as hand luggage for most airlines?

Eli, your best bet is to order the luggage and if you don't like it, send it back. Or try to find a decent luggage store in your area.

Every airline is different regarding carry-on.
