hello i have a 120v 60 hz 0.35a 35w and on the cord it says 300v. in my hotel bathroom there is a plug right next to the blow dryer that looks like an american plug, with no third hole. can i use this straightener here? thank you.
Maybe ask at your hotel Reception?
Probably not but should ask. Most likely it is a plug for an electric razor. The big issue is the amount of wattage that the straightener needs.
I once plugged a hair dryer into one of those receptacles in London, and it ran for about a second, then stopped. The breaker box was in the room, so I opened it and found the tripped 5 amp breaker. At 240V, that's only 1200 Watts, far less than most hair dryers. I needed 7½ amps. But you say your hair straightener is only 0.35 amps, 35W (I find that hard to believe), so it should work. But ask the desk to make sure the receptacle is truly 120V.
dee, I would not recommend connecting your Hair Straightener to what is probably a Shaver Outlet (it's probably labelled as that). I'm sitting in a hotel room in Paris at the moment, and there's also one of those installed in my room. Those outlets are usually current-limited so you may damage either the outlet assembly or your Straightener. At the least it may only trip the breaker as Lee described, but more "spectacular" effects involving sparks and smoke are also possible. Also keep in mind this will still only supply 50 Hz power, which could be a problem if the Straightener has any electronic components. My suggestion - buy a cheap Straightener at a local store and use that during your trip. The desk staff at your hotel should be able to point you to the nearest store that sells that sort of thing. Happy travels!
There are some straighteners (flat irons) that are dual voltage, but they are rare. It looks like yours is not, which means that it isn't advisable to plug it in.
Regardless of whether the Straightener is a dual-voltage model, I would NOT recommend connecting it to a current-limited Shaver outlet.
