Can I travel with less than 6 months left on my passport?

My passport expires Dec 2010. I will be travelling to Germany, Austria, and Czech Republic from June 12 -27. Will I have a problem with a passport that has a little less than 6 months left?

If it doesn't take you months and months to renew your passport (as my Russian passport does, ugh), why not just renew it? Not like you won't have to do it eventually.

If the rules are strictly enforced then you will have a problem, but you may find a gate agent that is lenient...but why take a chance? Just renew your passport.

Be advised that the Steve's link (at the bottom)is only relevant for non-US citizens traveling into the US.

Most countries in Europe require that you have three months validity left on your passport. For Germany, your passport simply needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.
From the German Consulate website:"...US citizens in possession of a valid US passport do not need a visa for airport transit, tourist or business trips (for stays up to 90 days). The passport must not expire before the end of the scheduled trip..." (German Consulate)

I once even traveled through Europe with less than three months, and it wasn't an issue entering or leaving.

Why risk it? Just re-new it. In the UK, when you re-new your passport with time left on it, they add that extra time on to the new one so you don't lose out; maybe they do the same thing in the US.

I just renewed mine on-line and it only took 4 weeks to get it back. There is a rush option for a little more money and if you are traveling in June, then I would do that to be safe. It is better to spend a little extra money to rush the renewal than get stuck in customs somewhere and being denied entry.

Here is the link to "How to get your passport in a hurry":

Cost: in addition to regular application fees, is $60 per application plus overnight delivery costs.

Thanks everyone! I have to take my band to a parade in Victoria B.C. on May 23rd and I am afraid I have waited too long to submit for a renewal and get the passport back in time for the Victoria trip (which now requires a passport). Then I wont have enough time to renew before June 12th. I guess I could pay to get an enhanced license and send off my passport for renewal.

I just renewed my passport. It took about three weeks (not expedited), including mailing it in and back. It will get a little slower as we approach summer. I would pay the extra to expedite your passport renewal rather than get both the passport and enhanced driver's license.

I also got an official passport recently and it took almost no-time (presumably because my employer pays for expedited).

As a bonus, the new passport books are the nicest I've ever had. I really like the background pictures on the visa pages. They were nice enough that I actually noticed - something I've never paid attention to in the past (I went back and compared the book to my last two passports).
