Can anyone recommend an itinerary? 2 months in Europe. PLEASE!

Hello, this is my first time to post. I need some good advice on planning my trip to Europe...

  1. I can spend up to 2 months.
  2. I am going in May.
  3. This is going to be my first time to Europe.
  4. I'm on a tight budget so I'd prefer accommodations as-cheap-as-possible.
  5. Places that I want to visit include: • London, Bath & York; • Edinburgh & Highlands; • Dublin & Dingle; • Paris, French Riviera & whatever is recommended; • Rome, Florence, Venice, Pompeii & Italian Riviera; • Vienna & Salzburg; • Prague & Cesky Krumlov; • Warsaw & Krakow; • Berlin, Munich & the Romantic Road; • Amsterdam & Haarlem; • Brussels & Werchter on 3-6 July because I must hit Rock Werchter Festival 2008.
  6. Last stop can be anywhere in Spain and it's not going to be included in the 2-month period.
  7. In particular, I really want to experience the mountain lift over Mont Blanc when travelling between France and Italy. How cold is the coldest in Summer? What kind of clothes do I need?
  8. Lastly, I'm under 26. Which EurailPass should I buy for the trip? As I've read from the internet, that with Global Passes one can use all public railway - does that mean I can travel within a Eurail country while also able to travel inter-country?

Thank you for looking at this post and I hope to have your advice! Please help.

Cheers!

Robbie, I don't know that anyone is going to be a great help with that length of a trip with that many stops. In 2 months you could do just about anything.

So here are some helpful hints:
- Travel in a straight line as much as possible. If you start in Edinburgh, don't end in London. Instead end in Spain. Make it a big loop.
- Spend at least four nights in each hotel. This will make finding a hotel much easier, as hotels are more likely to give out a reservation with an extended stay. Also it will make you feel more like a temporary local and less like a vagabond.
- If your rock festival is the non-negotiable, then start from there and plan out on either side.
- Check the Train Travel helps on this website in other places than the Help Line. There are some articles in here that should be helpful.
- In the summer you'll have to worry about heat more than cold. Bring a lightweight wool sweater and the rest some comfortable pants and collared shirts - all lightweight.

London is one of the most expensive destinations in Europe especially for accommodations--just so you're expecting it. In France I would suggest that you also include the area in southern France known as Provence. You asked about the temperatures and you mentioned taking the mountain lift over Mont Blanc-- the temperature in the mountains he is related to the elevation, for every 1000 feet that you go off the temperature will decrease by about 3 to 4°F.

To figure out a travel plan--
1.Order a Globus, Brennan, or Tauck Tour brochure for Europe. Their travel routes can be a great guide.
2.Read Rick's book Europe Through the Back Door. He gives a month long itinerary.
With this information you can visualize the route that you want to take.
You didn't discuss driving, but some areas are better driven, i.e. Censky Krumlov and the Romantic Road.

Not trying to sell anythign - but I really recommend ricks book (first Europe Through the back door 2008" for the best overall full itenerary. He will break down based on how much time you have. Then if you want more details check out his individual country books. But its a great affordable place to get ALL the info in one place for this kind of question. Then its easier to come back here and look for specific stuff (either with search at the top right) or posing questions for that area! Trust me - even seasoned travelers can learn a lot from that one book! Amazon is discounted or check out the library!
