I have the Paris 2011 ebook and it's impossible to read the maps!!! Does anyone know of where I can get a better copy to view? I live overseas and don't have access to a hard copy of Rick Steves' book.
I don't know if there are any but it would be nice if there were PDF files of the Maps to download as the ones in the books look funky.
Lesa, the sketched maps aren't to scale, anyway. In order to find the location of a monument or museum or whatever, just google it and get a map from there. Or google the address, or the town or village or country and usually, a map comes up.
I know the maps are 'broken up' into sections in order to fit...I have a Kindle and now that I have a trip locked down, I'll be buying a guide just to check it out for myself... I just got a sample of the Paris 2011 sent to me...(playing with it...)OK - Don't forget that you can do a little bit of zooming - you know how you move the cursor to get dictionary definitions? Do the same thing on the maps: when you see the 'magnifying glass' hovering over the map, then click it and it will zoom just enough. Some maps I could rotate and make them a bit larger. I can't find any maps in my sample that will allow me to 'break up' the maps into sections (as mentioned in the link I give below); my maps are very small general maps and not the ones that show all hotels in Paris, for instance. Here are some links to very recent discussions...These people have already taken the time to play around with theirs! ACTUALLY, I'm including ONE link; the 1st thread mentions the 2nd link, and in the 2nd link you'll find the 3rd! (and now I have the inspiration to actually learn all of the tricks and do-dads of my Kindle...besides merely flipping the pages LOL): http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/60863/travel-ebooks.html Good luck! I'm sure you'll be getting more responses...
Lesa, When you get to Paris you should be able to a hardcopy of a free tourist map from a hotel / tourist office. If you need one before hand, then you might want to check out the internet. Edwin
Another reason why when people ask "Kindle or iPad which is best for travel?" I always answer iPad. I have full color maps from scans and what I have dowloaded, full color books including RS Books from Kindle and iBooks, Italy Apps, access to my own Google maps that I have marked with sites I wish to see. Reference photos, my own notes, copies of tickets and travel documents.
Also for ipod touch, iphone or ipad; You have google maps built in - map or satellite photo zoomed to almost any resolution. Afraid you'll be out of WiFi reception when you need it? Just plan ahead and take a "screen shot" of the map. Now it's in your "photos" looking just the same as through WiFi.
Eileen:
Very elegant! Loved the link to link to link! It would be fantastic if Rick would post PDFs of all the maps online. Of course you can get the ones associated with the audio tours at iTunes, but I am increasingly dependent on my real, non-stylized maps and Google for exact locations. My maps are really marked up when I travel now. Ciao!
