Camping

My husband and I are planning a 3 month trip through France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy next spring/ summer (May, June, July). We are still very much in the beginning stages of planning as it is still a year away but we wondered what people's experiences of camping in Europe were like. If you have any great tips, experiences or campgrounds not to be missed, and and all help would be greatly appreciated.

We will be leasing a car, so out of the way sites are possible!

Thank you

My only experience with camping is in France.but here is what I found.

Camping seems to be more "civilized" meaning, much more organized with facilities, and offices, very often a playground, and organized activities. Almost a vacation destination. Costs are pretty good. and the atmosphere seems to be very family like, with a few sort of ragged long-haul travelers, with many people staying in spots for the whole vacation. Most of the ones I stayed in were pretty clean, and gated.

What I did not find in France are the sort of very isolated, rural, rugged campgrounds that we associate with US (& Canadian) national parks. My parents, who are avid campers, where a little disapointed in the lack of wilderness. However, if that is what you are looking for, it is much more acceptable to just stop and pitch a tent for the night in an isolated spot.

Liza - my husband & I are about to take a 3 month camping trip thru Italy, Germany, France, Ireland and England. We have never been to Europe before but have been fulltime RVing the US for 8 years.
My biggest help in planning so far - besides Rick's books - is Mike & Terri Church's European Camping. We've used their Mexico & Alaska camping books and wouldn't think of going to Europe with their advice.
