We are planning to campervan through parts of europe octber 2014. I am wondering if it will be too cold to make such a trip enjoyable.

Jacqueline;
October is a wonderful time of year to travel in Europe. We've been to Germany twice at that time and once to England. Generally we've had very pleasant weather. Some rain but also lots of sun. We've thought about doing such a trip our selves. I can only speak about Germany, but there are many camping parks all over. Along the Mosel there are parks along the river that look very inviting. I think you'll have a great time.

Thanks for your reply. I realise I should have been a bit more specific as to
the countries we want to visit. We're starting in Munich (BMW factory of course) then into Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Italy, South of France to the Loire and back to Munich. I'm hoping the campsites will all be open in Oct and if anyone has had experience of any in these countries I'd be grateful for any advice. I realise it is a long way out from when we are going but I like to research early and leave it all to settle in my mind before attacking it all closer to the time.

Thanks again for the reply. The link you gave is great, it serves all countries in Europe. We don't plan to book anything as figure it wont be so busy in October and that way we can just drift around stopping for as long or little as we like. If we are running out of time we'll just miss the south of France and Loire Valley plans . We have no idea how long we'd be spending in each place thats why the freedom of a campervan will suit us perfectly.

For the benefit of others, such as myself, would you give us an update, better yet, a trip report when you get back?

Later in October it can be cool in Austria and Switzerland,, its not summer that's for sure. At higher elevations snow would not be totally unheard of.. . I would decide which parts you want to visit and look up the average temps for the time of year you are going. There is a book you should look up , "Europe by Van and Moterhome" by David Shore and Patty Campbell, its a helpful resource and fun read. Personally if it was me I would start in Germany ( since you want to see BMW factory) and then I would head and stay south for rest of trip.

We plan to start in Munich, (that's the only part of Germany we will see) and head south as you suggest. Jim, it will be a long wait, we aren't going until OCt 2014 as this trip is on the end of a visit to Scotland for the Ryder Cup (golf). Pat, I've looked at buying the book you suggest but Amazon want a fortune to mail a $3 used copy to New Zealand so will have to think of a different way to get it.
Thanks everyone for their suggestions, it's really comforting to know that other people are out there taking one's queries seriously.

Jacqueline, I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a book, no no no, lol,, I buy 98% of my books from second hand stores,, and the other 2% of them from Costco! I bought that book for 3 bucks myself.
Also check libraries, its not a large book you can read it and take notes of references you are interested in .

Keep something in mind about a campervan tour. It's a great way to go from campground to campground, but not necessarily the best method to explore the well-known sites of the continent. Some campground locations sit close to popular attractions, but most are sort of in the middle of nowhere. Often, you can't drive a campervan into cities, or at least, doing so is impracticle. Campgrounds also may not have great access to public transportation.
