Any suggestions for calling the US from Europe. I was considering buying a 3 month subscripion from Magic Jack for $39. I know Rick has an article on this. Any suggestions or other companies? We will be there for an extended time and making quite a few calls from Ireland ,Italy and Amsterdam. Thanks.
If you have access to free internet, then face time, Skype work great. Save your money.
For nearly three months in Italy, I bought a phone with international calling plans. Calling the US is less than €1 per minute, phone (I think the package was €50) comes loaded with some minutes. Top it up when you need to.
I've never used Magic Jack because I want something that I can use on the move. I've tried various solutions, but the one I use currently is Mobal's Unlimited SIM https://www.mobal.com/global-unlimited-sim/
It works great in my iPhone and allows me to keep in touch with people via Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp, like I do at home.
Thanks. I did by a Vonage phone plan for 9.95 a month plus fees for total of 19.95. It has free calling to the states from Europe and reduced Europe city calling. It recieved good reviews...hopefully it will be a good as they say.
My go to for calls home is skype with an iPod touch. It needs WiFi but can dial landlines for a couple cents a minute. One nice feature is if it's set up beforehand, you can dial the U.S. phone number as if you are dialing from the states - no special international or country codes needed. I did pack a headset with a microphone, I found it cut down the background noise if I was using WiFi in a McDonald's or Starbucks.
