calculate rain expense?

Im taking a limited number of trains this trip and dont know if a railpass is worth it.

im trying to add up the prices of second class from place to place and not having luck regarding some places such as Budapest to Venice.

can someone help me figure out how to be accurate on individual rail trip costs?

Simply go to the national rail sites, look for the British flag for the English version, and plug in your dates and get a price.

sometimes the weather can add a bit of delay if I'm intending to walk around a lot, but usually I have a back up plan.

I don't really think rain adds a lot of expense, it just rearranges the order I do things in.

It will probably be cheaper to bring an umbrella from home. The ones sold on the street during a storm will be more expensive. You should also figure in the cost of cabs if you prefer that over walking.

The rain in Venice may affect your game of tennis.

Michael

look at seat61.com. Link here. seat61

it will help you to find the individual county's web sites. Or you can use google. Try inputting in "name of country train system" and see what comes of it.

just an fyi, on my trip several weeks ago from Vienna to Budapest, the cost for my advance ticket purchase was 19 Euros.

happy trails.

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains.

Actually, rain can be expensive -- have you all seen the reports of flooding and unfortunate drownings in Italy last week? Hopefully ran and trains both work out for Micheal.

Also, while national railroad sites can help with that particular country's trains, the French www.sncf.com/en and Spanish www.renfe.com aren't necessarily user-friendly. The German http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml seems to cover trains for all of Europe, so might be the best single source to start comparing train journey prices. Rick Steves' Website also has lots of train & railpass info under Travel Tips>Transportation.

So who else realized that the title of the thread has a typo and should read "" calculate TRAIN expense" ? Hence the flippancy of some responses (mine included).

While the Deutsche Bahn site has timetables for many European trains, it only gives fares for journeys that start and/or finish in Germany.

@Philip - of course! Good point.

Also, as Ray indicated above, you can often get outstanding prices on train tickets booked early, but you might be restricted to that particular train at that particular time, so there might be less flexibility for a traveler in exchange for a lower fare.

Also, even with a railpass, some train journeys require additional costs for mandatory reserved seats or other factors.

For your convenience, Rick’s Train Travel Time & cost Map gives you an overview of faster trains at regular, 2nd-class fares. The Budapest-Venice estimate is $150. Many of the national railway web sites don't sell international routes, especially with a connection, and so may not give prices for the whole route. To compare flight prices, see www.skyscanner.com.

Here is a direct link to The Man In Seat 61's list of which rail site to go to for each ticket (by starting country): http://tinyurl.com/bo8x6o6

I'm glad to see that you understand that a rail pass is rarely the way to go these days, particularly if you're taking "a limited number of trains."

And you can correct your post, to make it more likely you will get the responses you want. Make sure you're logged in; under your name you will see "Edit/Delete". Choose Edit, and you can change the title of your post from "rain" to "train."

Oh dear, if Michael corrects the title, then half the replies won't make any sense at all.

I thought the typo was "rain" for "rail." But really "train"? Ohhh, that's different! Never mind! ; )

I honestly thought this was going to be some super-numbers-minded person calculating how much their vacation was diminished monetarily if rain affected certain days of their trip, preventing them from doing certain things or enjoying them. I stopped in to see what the factors in the calculation were! and then to see Norma's response first up there just made me giggle!
