We have decided to drive from Belgium to Caen. Does anyone have suggestions on hotels (clean is important!) in Caen? AND--is there a central place to pick up tours of the beaches or does one need a reservation for the tour ahead of time?
Here are websites where you can look at tours (these recommended by Rick) and find the answer to your second question):www.battlebus.fr (from Bayeux only)www.victorytours.com (from Bayeux only)www.memorial-caen.fr (from Caen only)www.ddaybattletours.comwww.overlordtour.com (based in Bayeux)Bayeux is a bit more convenient for connecting with the tours listed above, but there are tours from Caen as well.
Are you aware that if you pick up a rental car in one country and drop it off in another that you will have to pay a hefty surcharge? It might be cheaper to rent two cars. Drop the first one off on the Belgian side of the border, take public transportation into France, and pick up another car there.
Maura; have used the Novotel on Cote de Nacre and found it clean, OK $'s, and very handy to the city and surrounding area.
It's located adjacent to the ring road that encircles Caen, lots of parking, and a tram just down the street to get you into the city centre in minutes. The nearby ring road exit when leaving Caen heads immediately toward the Cdn/UK D-Day beaches and in minutes from the hotel you're in the country.
