I just got back from Italy and France. Unfortunately my airline lost my checked luggage, so I wasn't able to buy many gifts that I intended to. Now that I'm home I want to purchase some wine, olive oil and cheese online to be shipped to the U.S. Does anyone know of an Italian (preferably near Livorno) or French winery website that will ship to the U.S.? I keep getting errors saying they can't ship to the U.S.
Assuming you live in Clawson, MI, and the laws there are the same as they were several years ago (when I wanted to send my parents some wine), Michigan is one of those states that do not allow individuals to receive wine shipped in from elsewhere. If that has changed, then go to K&L's website. Huge wine importer, they're located in California, but have a lot of good Italian and French wines. Olive oil and cheese, you can find in tons of places, including places like Williams-Sonoma or Amazon. I just bought two jars of a Dutch item that I love, speculaas spread, from Amazon. I definitely should have brought more than one jar home! And Zingerman's.
I'll second the recommendation for Zingerman's. I've ordered a few hard-to-find items from them. As far as the wine, find a good local wine shop who can help you choose something from one of the regions that you visited.
Many states do not allow shipments of wine directly to consumers, although you will have to check the specific laws of your state. Direct shipment of foreign cheese also is not allowed by federal law. Olive oil, however, is probably OK.
It will be cheaper for you to head over to Zingerman's in Ann Arbor. They have high quality products, and will let you sample.
Ah Zingerman's - besides Fall it's the thing I miss most about Ann Arbor!
Zingermans... just a few miles from me...definitely the place to go for the European food and ambience right in the middle of Ann Arbor.... should have an RS travel meeting there someday.
I like the Whole Foods store in Ann Arbor for European wine and cheeses, I always check them out when visitng my mother-in-law.
I don't know if you have a Cost Plus World Market near you (it's a chain but it's not all over the U.S.) but for people in general, they often stock a LOT of international products and have a good international wine selection for a chain.
I just ordered a case of wine from this store in Montalcino:
http://www.enotecadipiazza.com/en/index.html We actually visited this store while we were there and brought back two bottles. I decided to order a case more and they didn't charge any shipping! It was a pretty painless process.
