We bought a Garmin GPS about a year ago and I need to buy maps for Europe. Best Buy told me to buy a Europe card from Garmin, on-line, but I'm not sure exactly what I need. There is the City Navigator® Europe NT. Is that what I need? We will be in Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany, and traveling by car. Thanks!
You can just buy a card, OR you can buy it on DVD and choose what you want to put onto your Garmin (via a micro SD card). For example, instead of searching through data for ALL of Europe, you'd just have Italy, Switzerland, France, and Germany loaded. It all depends on your ability and comfort. Some people just prefer buying the card. You're likely looking at $75-100 to buy either of them. And yes, City Navigator Europe NT is what you're after, just double check that what you get works with your GPS. You don't have to buy directly from Garmin, there are plenty of resellers.
Another option is to purchase one of the several Garmin GPS units containing pre-installed European maps. Look up these models on the Garmin website, and then check their prices at amazon.com. You could buy a new GPS unit, sell your current unit, and conceivably end up spending less than if you bought the DVD or memory card. The drawback is the extra time this method requires; the advantages are a new GPS, a new warranty, European maps already installed, and possibly additional features that your current model may not have. Just an option to consider.
For last Dec we bought an SD card of Europe maps on ebay for about $50. Sold it for $65 when we got home.
Thanks for the help and great ideas!
I also suggest doing a google maps or mapquest map and loading it with your info.....from one city to the next. You can also then upload those onto your GPS. Our GPS here has the habit of taking you off the autobahn and through a town at the first possible exit before the most efficient exit into the town.
Garmin suggested to me that the european map download to the micro sd card could not be used /loaned to another Gps anyone know if this is true?
If you mean, bought as a DVD and then downloaded onto GPS/SD card, true. Even if you buy a new GPS, it won't allow you to use it on the new GPS unit if you've already used it with another. 100% true through legal options, but some people do crack the protection to use it on more than one device.
We bought our maps directly through Garmin. Although we didn't have a car during our two trips to Europe, we used the Garmin when walking. We will use it again this summer when walking. Very handly. Elaine
I bought a Europe 2010 card on Craigs List for $45 and it work quite well on our Garmin. If they didn't charge such a ridiculous amount for these items people wouldn't be reselling 'em!
Don't you have to uninstall it on the original Garmin in order to resell it? Then if you travel to Europe again don't you have to repurchase? I did this a few years ago for England and I guess I got it from Garmin, but it is still on my GPS, but now I want to get it for Budapest, Hungary, and Poland and Czech Republic, but don't want to buy it and not have it install properly...but I also don't want to pay more than I have to.
I bought a used card for Ireland and sold it when I was done with it. I borrowed a card when I went to Italy & Germany from someone I know who has the same GPS. It worked in his and in mine.
According to Garmin, if you buy the card then you can use it in any other unit. If you download or buy the DVD then it is linked to that particular unit (according to a guy at REI)
So, this is an SD card? Does it cost more... why would someone buy the DVD or download? (I guess because they don't know what they are doing... I did the download) but I will buy the other if more than one person can use it... does this make any sense?
The card simply slides into the small slot on your GPS unit and you're ready to go. When you return home it can be removed to resell or saved for your next trip.
Thanks... that makes sense... two people cannot use it at the same time and the info stays on the card, it is not in the GPS...got it!
