Buying a mobile phone in Prague

I need some advice from those who have recently been to Prague. We will be arriving on Sunday, July 3 in Prague and I would like to buy a mobile phone somewhere close to my hotel which is the Hilton in Old Town. Where should I go and how much are they?

Alyce, Unfortunately I don't have much information on the Cell networks in Prague, so can't provide any advice. It would help if you could you provide a bit more information? Do you currently have a Cellphone, and if so which network are you with? Are you expecting to make a lot of calls back to the U.S. or mostly local calls? You might also consider buying an inexpensive unlocked quad-band GSM phone from E-Bay and a SIM from one of the "travel phone" firms (I can provide further details if you're interested). That way you'll be ready to go as soon as you step off the plane. Happy travels!

I have a cell phone but not a smart phone. My husband has a smart phone with Verizon. We were trying to figure out if we should do the conversion on his phone or buy one there. I plan to call back to California and call people in our travel group when we get separated while travelling. I read in one of Rick Steve's tips that it might be easier just to buy a phone in Europe. Not sure which way to go.

Alyce, check out mobal.com. I've been using this for years without the first issue. They are a VERY reputable provider and come highly recommended in many of the high end travel and personal finance magazines/web sites.

Couple years ago we bought a mobile phone in Prague. I think it cost around 50 bucks. Then we bought minutes for 500 czk. I believe it was Vodafon. The stores are all over. Hotel receptionist can advice you which one is close to your hotel.

Alyce, Is your Cell phone also with Verizon? Could you elaborate on how you plan a "conversion" of your husband's Smartphone? Finally, will the people in your travel group have U.S. phone numbers or Czech numbers? If they have U.S. numbers, each call you make will be long distance back to the U.S.

you can google quad band gsm unlocked phone and buy a cheap one before heading over. once you land there you can visit any vodafone or t-mobile stores to get a prepaid sim card. another option is if you use skype wi-fi hotspot is easy to find.
