Business in Monaco: Where to go before and after?

My husband has a business trip in Monaco. We have 3 days before and 2 days after for leisure travel on our own. So many places, so little time! Provence? Italy? We are arriving in Nice 9am Sat., need to be back at hotel in Monaco Monday night. We can leave Monaco Friday morning, need to be at Nice airport for flight 6am Sunday. I'm thinking Santa Margherita Ligure or Portofino at the beginning (Cinque Terre seems too far; is it?) Thinking Avignon or Aix before we have to leave. Anyone with personal experience or advice? Thanks.

Lots of personal experience, ask away. Since you haven't (wisely) said the actual dates you will be there can you share which hotel for best advice? Especially if the company is picking up the tab the best way from Nice Aeroport to Monaco is helicopter, especially if you are staying in Fontvieille. The Columbus Hotel is only a couple of minutes walk through the rose garden. Are you able to miss the Monaco Grand Prix? (I usually go the weekend after for a week, but not this year.) Do you plan to have a car? If so I can give plenty ideas as we always (well nearly always) have a car, but if not I can too as sometimes the best place for the car is in the garage. Are you aware of the free parking in Monaco? I don't know what you are after, what is important. I'd stick on the French side of the border because most of what you could find on the Italian Riviera you can also find on the French Riviera, not too far away. Some of the hill towns in the Luberon can rival Italian hill towns, there is good art, the beaches are way closer and if you know where to look you can find sand. The calanques are unmissable and you can do pretty well along the coast before Saint-Raphael. Don't write off Cap Ferrat, and there is lots more to do in Monaco than you would think. You may be looking for getting further away and overnighting. Me, I'd daytrip from Monaco. That's what I do normally. Tell you what - I'll go on the business trip for you two - it will save you so much trouble.

Hotel is the Fairmont Monte Carlo. June 17-26. Should we just get a car for the whole time and do day trips? Any advice for driving in that area?
