Bulgaria / Romania / Schengen

We have all read that on 31 March Bulgaria and Romania begin using Schengen border crossing rules.

An exception of note is that, for the time being, because of an objection from Austria, land crossings will still require a passport.

You might also expect passport checks on some flights as well.

Even though it will be Schengen to Schengen, the arriving country has the right to check passports and interrogate you.

I found this out personally flying from Greece to Sweden a couple of years ago. Both Schengen countries. Very intense questioning about my remaining movements in Schengen countries.

Frank, the shifty looking people always get the attention. I got my papers checked and my carryon x-rayed a second time in Frankfurt last year (Frankfurt to Budapest).

I suspect there will be no paperless ground transportation to and from Bulgaria and Romania for a while to come. Austria put the nix on it and I suspect it was their fear of more middle eastern refugees. They have been running border checks off and on for a number of years.
