Budget Accomodations in Salzburg, Prague & Berlin

Hello all!
I had some great responses for Amsterdam & Brussels (thank you!), so it's on to the next bookings.

We're looking for budget hotels/pensiones for 2 nights each in Berlin & Prague, 1 night in Salzburg. Prefer to stay under 100 euro, shared facilities are ok...private are a bonus. We're spending the week prior camping in Germany, so a double bed is going to feel like luxury!

Most important factors: Good locations so we can walk/ public transit to attractions, cozy restaurants nearby, & available parking (only for Salzburg & Prague).

What we appreciate are your own personal experiences & recommendations. I am reading up on the Lonely Planet & Rick's suggestions, as well as Trip Advisor. But nothing beats a personal story from you all!

Thanks!

For Prague, we like Guest House Lida--it's a little out of the city center but an easy tram-ride to get to the things you'll want to see. The hosts are incredibly helpful, the rooms very clean and comfortable and the restaurants in the neighborhood are good and less expensive than those in the main part of Prague.

In Berlin, we like Pension Peters. It's very near public transportation locations. It's very reasonably priced, clean, also a great breakfast, and comfortable. I've read reviews that say that noise was a problem but we didn't have that experience.

For Prague, we stayed at the Hotel Monica. Here's their website: http://www.hotelmonica.cz/ This is a modern hotel with large rooms and located in a residential area. Their breakfast buffet was awesome. They also have a restaurant that has great schnitzel. We did not drive there (left the car in Vienna), however, there is parking available. It says on the website that they are easy to get to because they are outside the city center.

It's a bit more than your 100 euros, but not by much. I stayed at the Goldene Krone in Salzburg and really enjoyed it. It was across the river from the old town, but was a nice area and the staff was helpful. Here's the URL http://www.hotel-goldenekrone.com/default.htm

In Berlin we stayed at the Hotel Kastanienhof. It's in the east and I really liked the location. Breakfast was terrific and staff was helpful. URL http://www.kastanienhof.biz/index.php?id=9&L=1

I stayed in both location summer 2007 so check tripadvisor reviews for recent updates.

We stayed at Pension Peters in Berlin. A family room was 103 Euro (for 6!), so I am sure a smaller room would be much cheaper!! It was very close to the Savignyplatz S-Bahn station and still close to the Zoo station (with more amenities, such as a TI office). We fell in love with a pizza place across the Platz (cheap- 5 Euro pizzas and spaghetti- and cozy!), the breakfasts were good, and the staff was SO NICE. It was an RS recommend and a TA top listing, and I didn't regret it one bit. Oh, also walking distance from the Kurfürstendamm shopping district. I would not hesitate to stay there, again. There was a bar right underneath us (the family room), but noise was bearable- and I am a light sleeper. Oh, also our bath was private.

We stayed at the Pappillion in Prague.

it is cheap and within walking distance of just about everything. You can google map them. very easy to find from train station. It looks a little run down in the lobby but if you get a room across the mini courtyard, you will love the huge room, kitchen, and private bathtub. We had a great stay there!!! It is not a party hostel but they can give you places to go on "drinking tours" at night. Very VERY quiet, safe, etc. I slept likea baby the 2 nights we were there. management was great to us and let us use the internet as long as we wanted (even though it had a posted time restriction).

I'll give another vote for Pension Peters in Berlin. The staff there was very nice -- our luggage had gotten lost, and the manager was excellent about taking messages from the airline about this. We did have a problem with noise, as a couple of rooms of French kids were down the hall from us, and they liked to talk in the hall late at night. But that's on them, not the hotel. The location was great and the rooms were clean. We paid around $60/night, but that was a few years ago, before the change to euros.

For Prague, we went with Rick's suggestion with getting a room from the room finding service in the train station. Found something for around $60/night, in town, nice room, with its own bathroom.

In Salzburg, we stayed with Helga Bankhammer on the Moosstrasse, mostly because she had a farmhouse with animals and our son was 3 at the time. The house doesn't smell like a farm, don't worry. The room was quite nice and had a HUGE bathroom. We paid around 45 euro/night. Her info's in Rick's book.

I really like Institute San Sebastian in Salzburg. I've stayed as a single and with my family in tow. It's cheap, clean, quiet and well run. Basically a very clean and quiet hostel.

They have larger dorm rooms with bunk beds as well as rooms that look like typical college dorm rooms (three beds is the smallest I've seen).
