Budapest to Madrid May/June

My husband and I are venturing on our first trip “without the kids”. We have travelled Rome to London weaving our way via train and hire car for five weeks with two older teenage sons. This trip we plan to arrive in Budapest 14th May, travel to Vienna then through Austria and Switzerland, Milan, along the French coast to Barcelona and fly home from Madrid in the 20th June.
I’m planning 3 or 4 nights in each of Budapest, Vienna, Milan, Barcelona and Madrid. The rest of our trip is unplanned at the moment. I usually plan everything and prearrange all accommodation and transport, but with only two of us plan to wing it a little this trip.
I’m struggling a little with places/events and would welcome any suggestions. Bad news is I can’t find any way to squeeze the Monaco GP into the itinerary, we’re about a week late.

The cities that you have mentioned all merit at least 4 full days there (ie 5 nights) plus travel days. Milan would be the one place where I would spend less time.

Check out rome2rio.com for route options.

Without knowing anything about your interests, it’s difficult to advise on locations. You have a lot of cities on your itinerary, so I would want some time in the countryside.
