Budapest to Krakow to Hamburg

Hello!

Next month I'll be travelling through Europe. I've booked a few trains and a couple flights to other destinations, but I'm not sure about these 4 places. I'll be needing to get from Budapest to Krakow to Hamburg and then to Amsterdam. An overnight train isn't really an option for Budapest to Krakow right now.. So is bus the only other cheaper option? Can anybody recommend a reliable bus line to take if this is the case, and should I book asap?

Also, what would be the best way to get to and from Hamburg? Bus, or train? Flights seem pretty expensive.

Thanks a lot!

The daytime trains from Budapest to Krakow are not expensive, just require a couple of connections. I have done the overnight train before with no specific issues. See also the recent thread at https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/transport-train-bus-from-budapest-to-krakow.

Krakow to Hamburg is also a long train trip; 10.5 hours with one or two connections and no overnight option; advance ticket discounts available through DeutscheBahn for this route as well as for Hamburg-Amsterdam. You just bite the bullet and plan to spend a day on a train, unless you can find an attractive flight at www.skyscanner.com. If you were using a rail pass (but sound like you are not), then you'd get a lot of "value" out of that long travel day.

Hi,

I'll comment on going from Krakow to Hamburg? I would do that this way: Take Krakow to Warsaw, then Warsaw to Berlin Hbf. direct, change Berlin Hbf to Hamburg Hbf. Which ever route you take, you have to go through Berlin Hbf.

From Hamburg to Amsterdam two ways are suggested: take the ICE Hamburg Hbf to Duisburg Hbf., change to Amsterdam Centraal, or Hamburg Hbf to Hannover Hbf on the ICE, then change to Amsterdam.

The only bus line I would suggest is "Berlinlinienbus.de" They run buses mostly out of Berlin.
