We finish a river tour in Budapest next JUne and have 9 days to get to Amsterdam. We have traveled in Europe before. We are planning to train to Prague, then Berlin and then Amsterdam. Have not seen any of those three except to change planes in Amsterdam. Are those good choices?? Any sleeper cities along the same route. Any recomendations for things to do in those cities. Also we like the Rick Steves type hotels.....we do have his books.....

I recently did a river cruise Budapest to the Black Sea, and added 4 days in Prague as the pre-trip extension. I would be happy to go back to both Prague and Budapest; you might consider taking a few days after your cruise to see more of Budapest. In Prague, we spent most of our free day in the Jewish Quarter; there are 7 different sights and each was well worth seeing. Several in our group attended evening concerts and enjoyed them very much. In Budapest we enjoyed the Great Market Hall, and at Gerbeau I had possibly the best hot chocolate in my life [I may have to go back to Paris to confirm]. Others went to the Szechenyi baths. These are all things that RS recommends in the Eastern Europe book, so my best advice is to read it diligently and figure out what appeals most to you. Good luck and have a great time!
You might add in Vienna enroute. That way, your Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Berlin train trips will all be in the neighborhood of 3-4 hours a piece, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing in the cities.
For the Berlin to Amsterdam leg, you might check out budget airlines, since the train trip there would be a good bit longer.
