How much time do you have? First city that popped into my mind was Krakow, Poland. My next choice would probably be Ljubljana, Slovenia. Then maybe Brno, Czech Rep. A lot depends on how much time you have, how you are traveling from city to city, and what you like to see and do in each city (what are your interests)?

Within the Czech Republic there are several beautiful towns worth seeing. Check out Kutná Hora, Karlovy Vary, and Český Krumlov.

If you are taking the train between Prague and Budapest, you will pass through Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

If you chose Bratislava I highly recommend Marrols Hotel. We booked an executive room which was just about perfect in every way. Large room with desk and two leather club chairs. Big comfy bed, dresser as well as closet. Minibar is free. Fabulous breakfast is included. For a modest fee they even had a driver meet us at the train station. The hotel is just a couple of blocks from the Old Town. We went for an opera, but I think it would be a great place to spend a couple of nights. The hotel is also close to a river promenade and several restaurants. Having not been to Bratislava before we did our recovery night in Budapest first. If we did it again we would absolutely use Marrols as our recovery spot. So relaxing and such a sweet staff. https://www.hotelmarrols.sk/

From Prague, I took overnight trips to Cesky Krumlov and Olomouc (both covered in Rick's book), and enjoyed these.

From Budapest, I took overnight trips to Eger and Pecs (preferred Pecs), and day trips to Szentendre and Vac (preferred Vac). All except Vac are covered in Rick's book (although Pecs wasn't covered when I went in 2008). I learned about Vac from the Frommer's Budapest guide.

Krakow, not exactly small and a bit full of tourists but beautiful and fill of history. Probably best for 3 nights.

Kyiv, not small at all but worth the time and a lot can be seen in 2 or 3 nights. if you want to walk the streets of proud people struggling for survival and be in the center of current history, it can't be beat. Watch BREAK POINT and WINTER ON FIRE, and if you are moved, go. One of my favorite countries.

Podgorica, as access to Budva on the Adriatic. Not too many tourists, beautiful old walled town. Another favorite for a return trip.

Most of Eastern Europe is accessible on Wizzair, Nonstop for under $100

Train

Eger for the wine and old town
Pecs for the Ottoman history
Gyor for the old town and the nearby Archabbey at Pannonhalma.
Slovakian High Tatras for nature, mountains, Fishing
