Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich

Hello-

We have a 12 night trip in early October... flying into Budapest and home from Munich.
Any suggestions on itinerary loop and travel between cities... we would like to hit Prague, Vienna, Salzburg but could cut if necessary.

Thanks in advance.

That is a lot of cities. I would start in Budapest, stay 3 nights, go to Vienna, stay 4 nights, go to Munich and finish the trip. You will find that each of those cities are multiple-night places. We are right now in Budapest, on our 3rd visit. We are staying 4 nights. We could easily stay 2 more, just in Budapest.

I would eliminate Prague and Salzburg.

That is a lot of places to cram into 12 nights.
I have been to all these places and love them.

You might start in Budapest then Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Prague.

Five places in 12 days. All these places deserve more than 2 nights. Munich, suggest 3 nights I would go with 3 nights in Budapest, 1 in Salzburg and 3 in Prague.

Other options are go down to four places and eliminate the one farthest from the others. That would be Prague.

Come back and do Prague, Berlin and Poland.

Great time of year for the region.

I never do understand "nights" but let's assume you aren't counting the night in transit from the US.

Night 1, you arrive after noon and are jet lagged in Budapest
Nights 2, 3, 4 in Budapest.
Early morning train to Vienna and nights 5, 6, 7 in Vienna
Train to Salzburg and nights 8 and 9
Train to Munich and nights 10 and 11 and 12

Just what I would most enjoy, except I would arrive in Munich and leave from Budapest.

Two days in Budapest is plenty. It's not one of the jewels.
Spend more time in Vienna...there is far more to see and enjoy there.

Salzburg can be seen in one full day on the way to Munich and a second day there is a fine alternative to Munich.....but I would actually suggest Prague over Munich. Save Munich for another time when you can properly explore that region, not just that city. In Ulm, um Ulm, um Ulm herum....
If you insist upon Munich (since you fly from there) skip Prague, add time to Vienna and Salzburg.

We stayed in Munich for three nights and did a day trip to Salzburg which was fine.

Budapest - nights 1-3 (two full days)
Vienna - nights 4-6 (two full days)
Fly to Prague - nights 7 and 8 (one full day)
fly to Munich - nights 9, 10, 11, and 12 (three full days) - day trip to Salzburg.

That's a lot and I'd probably skip Prague, even though it's a favorite of mine. But it's just really out of the way.

Can you change where you fly in and out of? If you could, I'd say fly out of Prague and that way you can have Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich all together, and then one flight to Prague.

Hi,

When you are in Munich, you could do a day trip to Bad Ischi to see the Kaiservilla, the summer residence of the Emperor Franz Joseph but by guided tour only...well worth it if you're into the history.

Bad Ischl is also the home of F Lehar, the composer of the "The Merry Widow." (Die lustige Witwe). His museum is there where the Zentrum begins.
