Ideas for an independent day trip from Budapest and back? Thanks
When I go back to Budapest I want to vist the Aquincum Museum and surrounding Roman ruins. http://www.aquincum.hu/en/ Though this is not really a day trip in that it is in suburban Budapest.
Day-long cruise on the Danube. I belive this could include a stop in Bratislava.
Pecs, a couple of hours south of Budapest.
Vineyards and wineries.
Szentendre is a delightful community located on the west side of the Danube upriver from Budapest. It is an art community and has a wonderful outdoor museum (Skanzen) nearby. I like to ride the train up to Szentendre and ride the boat back to Budapest.
Yup, I was going to say Szentendre also. Very pretty little town, great local products in the shops, a couple of interesting little churches, and you can have lunch or a drink at a cafe overlooking the Danube.
Another not-quite-a-daytrip suggestion, Memento Park. seems like it took an hour or so on public transit, and if you're interested in 20th C history, it is super cool. Also it's in an area on the edge of Budapest that tourists would rarely see. (Lots of Cold War era apartment blocks along the way, then through an area that feels almost rural.)
And thanks to the person who suggested the Roman ruins--how did I miss that?? Adding it to my list for this year's return to Budapest.
blue439, nailed the easiest; except in the winter when the boat doesn't run. Well, even then but you take the train both ways. You can even do a day trip to the archabbey at Pannonhalma, but it's a full day. Also in addition to Szentendre you can do Esztergom and Visegrad but pick 2 of the 3, because all 3 is a rough day. Less interesting but fun is Vac and the Bear park.

Now on my list for a return visit!
