Budapest and Prague in September/October

How safe is it to travel to Budapest and Prague in September/October of this year? Is there unrest in either of those cities because of the immigrant situation and are Americans appreciated or hassled there because of our nationality?

There is no unrest in Budapest and Prague and certainly Americans are not hassled neither other nationalities. Actually Budapest and Prague are among the safest big cities in Europe. Very low crime, no terrorists. You will be much safer there than in Texas.

While no one can predict the future, there isn't currently any reason to avoid travel to Prague or Budapest. And I don't think you need to worry about anyone even acknowledging that you are American unless you make a point of letting everyone know for some reason, which they might just find odd :)

Double posted question with the other question running with more responses under "Trip Report." I know, a bit confusing, but you might want to review those responses.

I love this question. I have a small business investment in Budapest and I spend about a month each year there, spread over two or three trips. I have that investment for the sole purpose as an excuse to visit this amazing city. I have been doing this for about a dozen years.

The Hungarian government has controlled the migrant flow across their borders so the conditions that impacted tourists last year are not prevalent at all this year. So don’t worry about that.

We have traveled a lot in Europe and I am pretty confident in saying you won’t find a people that are kinder or more helpful to tourists. My wife and I wait for that one moment on each trip. It’s become a tradition. Unsolicited, will it be help at the metro stop, or assistance with the train ticket machine, or advise on which candy to purchase or “are you lost, can I help?”. After about a dozen years of traveling to Budapest we still look like tourists and we still get offers of assistance. Welcome home I always say.

Prague? Ehhhh, wellll………., been there but not my specialty. You need Nigel’s input.

I have been to both cities, Budapest twice now--just went in May--and as a female travelling solo I feel very safe walking alone even late at night. Certainly never hassled for being an American! Hungarians are indeed an unusually kind and exceedingly helpful people, I didn't feel the same warmth in Prague, but we all have our favorites...

We stayed in both cities last November, among others. We were quite concerned before we left. Aside from a few street beggars, we encountered no sign of immigrants. We were treated very well by everyone. The Intercontinental in Prague was a very good accommodation, with an excellent location. The Corinthia in Budapest was first rate in every respect. I would go back to both cities without reservation. In this day and age, however, the tourist especially must remain vigilant, whether at home or abroad.
