Bucharest Romania - Logistics for quick visit the mountains?

I am looking for suggestions for the best way to visit the mountains outside of Bucharest. Thank you!

We end our 3-week trip to Romania in Bucharest. Our daughter and SIL will join us there for four days, arriving midday Friday and departing Tuesday evening. We want to spend some time with them in the mountains.

The area between Sinaia and Brașov seems to be the best "mountain" experience close to Bucharest, but I would love suggestions. (Though I have heard this area can be quite crowded on the weekends, as are the roads to/from Bucharest.)

Is it too much to visit this area as a day trip from Bucharest on Monday? And would you recommend renting a car for flexibility or just going by train?

Or should we leave Bucharest on Sunday afternoon, spend Monday in the mountains, and return to Bucharest on Tuesday before flying out that day?

Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in. If you won’t have spent time in Brasov earlier on your trip, that would be a great way to include it. And definitely an overnight is best. Sinaia is a cute little town and seemed to be a tourist favorite - just not American tourists. But I am not sure about the definition of a mountain experience. But either would be a very nice contrast for Bucharest.

Depending on your family, another way to organize would be to bite the 3 hour bullet and head on to either of those places by train on Friday after their arrival for 2 nights. Then your Bucharest nights together at the end.

If you decide against an overnight, I personally would probably opt for a paid day trip on Sunday or Monday and let someone else drive.

Thank you for the input, TTM!

To clarify, we want to spend time in nature on easy hikes and enjoying the scenery.

My preference is an overnight too, but am concerned about crowds leaving Bucharest for the weekend. But maybe I’m overthinking it.

If you have the time, I would recommend spending at least one night in the mountains instead of making it a day trip. Sinaia and Brasov are both great choices and travelling on Monday should help you avoid the heavier weekend traffic. Trains are convenient, but renting a car offers more flexibility if you plan to explore several places. Either option can work well depending on how much sightseeing you want to do. Enjoy your trip, and please like this post if you find it helpful.

Barb, sorry I can't help you much either, as my one foray into the mountains involved a death defying drive up the Transfăgărășan Highway and then back down, which scared me a lot, but I'm glad I went.

But I know there is lots of hiking in the mountains, so I went into my research from the last year, and found this one blog that I remembered because it had some really interesting information in there about hiking in the various regions (including the mountains). You may want to look there and see what you find. I believe all of them are fairly close to Bucharest, so they'd be easy to get to from there. There is also information on a guidebook that's called "The Mountains of Romania" that might be helpful as well, but I would suggest checking out the blog as it might give you some ideas. https://www.uncover-romania.com/visit-romania/travel-ideas/hiking-in-romania-ideas-bucharest

The blog mentions hiking in Piatra Craiului, which is fairly close to Brașov, and that would be a great place to base yourself if needed.

What time of year will you be there?

I recall that you will be in Brasov. The Tampa Cable Car goes to the top of Mount Tâmpa. I understand there are views (some reviews say sweeping, others not so much) and walking paths from there. I've not been up there and the reviews are mixed. Some people say to just hike up to Mount Tampa, though that would obviously be a rigorous hike.

Thank you, brownsabrina, Mardee and CWSocial!

This portion of the trip will be the end of September. The easiest choice is to train to Sinaia or Busteni on Sunday and return by train to Bucharest on Monday evening. But complicating the decision, our daughter did a day trip to Sinaia 8 years ago. She loved it, but even if we choose Busteni, it will be very similar. And as you say, CWSocial, we will have been in Brașov on our own earlier in the trip.

It would be a bit more complicated and a bit more expensive, but we could rent a car in Bucharest, drive north on Sunday and stay around Măgura to hike Piatra Craiului, which Mardee mentioned.

The area around Măgura and Piatra Craiului looks beautiful, but I do feel that we are squeezing a lot into their 5 days/4 nights, and perhaps I am trying too hard. :)
