boots/shoes for walking

I'm going to England and Ireland in December and Janurary. I'll be walking alot and I know it will be cold and rainy. What are the best walking boots that can be worn with everything - jeans, skirts, etc. Some people have recommended born boots and blundstone rancher boots. My feet get cold easily, and once cold, I'm miserable.

This is a BIG favorite topic on this board. Check the Grafitti Wall for many recommendations: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti92.html You can also use Google's advanced search feature to locate older threads on this precise topic - it's easy, and described here: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/39695/bget-answers-to-your-questions--searching-ricks-archivesb.html I wear Doc Martens. They have thick, flexible, weather-proof soles. They can accomodate thick warm socks. The brogue style looks great with everything, and the short boots are great with pants and more stylish skirts. Then again, I wouldn't be caught dead in the hideous, loaf-of-bread looking boots that many on this board swear by. There are LOTS of recommendations for those via the links above.

I won't suggest UGGs although if you are in most city centres in England in December or January you will see several hundred (thousand?) examples of same. (tongue firmly planted in cheek, but based on personal observation)

Judith - what shoes do you wear in Indianapolis in winter? Do they work or are you still cold? Even though I live in mild-winter Atlanta I have a few pairs of sturdy shoes that I wear in winter. The only boots I have are not for walking more than 30 minutes so when I travel to Europe in winter I leave the skirts at home. 2 pairs of jeans and 1 black pant works for me so that I can wear my most comfortable and warm shoes. My daughter, on the other hand, lives in Chicago and swears that she can walk for hours in her boots. If you don't wear boots at home to do lots of walking, I'd not recommend you buy a pair to wear in Europe. Maybe you need to look at warmer socks.
