I am traveling to scotland at the end of september. When would the best time to book the hotel rooms? Should I do it right away or can I wait until mid august?

I've traveled in Scotland in early September and made some of my reservations the day of travel. If you have specific places in mind you might want to make them in advance. If there are local festivals or events hotels can fill, but at that time of year you should be okay. I generally book my first night and my last and find that the rest falls into place. I like the flexility that this gives me. The weather in Scotland can vary greatly from east to west and north to south. All those mountains and the ocean play havoc with the weather and make for a complex weather map that's really different from the continental weather that we're used to hear in the US.
