When I tried to book a room in Barcelona with one of Rick's recommendations I was asked to send a copy of my credit card
as well as a "clear copy of my passport". Have things changed?
I don't think I am comfortable with this. I'd appreciate any comments.

Hi John,
I share Kent's concern. We have a number of times sent cashier's checks deposits to secure rooms. That's the most I would do.
You might ask the Rick Steves organization (surely there's a way to do it online here) about the Barcelona hôtel and the credit card / passport thing.
It would certainly do no harm to inquire elsewhere in Barcelona about booking a room - just to compare practices and pricing.
