I would like to keep our friends and family at home updated through a blog. I'll have my DSLR camera, so I will have full resolution images to add to the blog. Any suggestions for an easy and free website to use?
Do you really need to post high resolution images to a blog? Reduce them and you have lots of free options: wordpress.com, blogger.com, etc. Even Facebook. You can post pictures on Google Photos - free unlimited storage if you can live with their compression, or you get 15GB of free storage (I think) if you want to preserve the original photo quality.
Barbara,
There are a number of good Blog sites you could look at, such as......
- https://wordpress.com/
You'll have to decide which one appeals to you the most, in terms of the presentation you want and being "user friendly". I believe those websites all allow photos, but not sure about videos.
I travel with both a P&S camera as well as a DSLR, but use only the P&S camera for Blog photos. I always shoot RAW with the DSLR and there's no way I can process those photos when travelling (nor do I want to spend my holiday sitting in front of a computer).
A Blog is a nice way to let family and friends share the holiday, but I've found that it's sometimes difficult to find the time to make entries every day when I'm touring. The method I've found that works for me is to write a detailed diary each day using a Word document on my Netbook. I use excerpts from that and post them to my Blog when time permits. Some Blog entries might even be completed after I get home. Diarizing usually only takes 15-20 minutes at the end of each day, so it's not diffcult to do.
Good luck with your Blog!
I use Wordpress to blog using my android phone. I almost exclusively use photos from my phone camera, though an occasional one from my small point and shoot camera. Wordpress lets you adjust overall settings for posts that adjust the default photo size (I choose medium I think) to save space, because as mentioned, the free Wordpress has a limit on storage. I found it much easier to set it up on my desktop computer before leaving to ensure the layout, etc. looked good.
If you're going to transfer photos from your camera to your computer or phone, make sure you bring the technology/cords/apps to do it (my camera has NFC connection so I can transfer to phone easily). Practice before you go to see how long it takes and work out the bugs. Make sure the device you're going to post the blog from has room to store all those giant photos, too.
I started using Wordpress 10 years ago on our first trip to Italy and have continued to use it for my three blogs. Be sure to export your photos to a smaller size before posting. It will make the blog load faster for your viewers.
Thanks, everyone, for all the tips and good suggestions! I will check out the blog sites. I will be able to reduce the size of the images for the blog on Paint, so that will solve the problem of space.
I used Blogger for years, but apparently it's no longer supported by Apple. I use my iPad and iPhone. The last couple of trips I've used Wordpress. I don't like it as much, but it's okay. I'm a pretty low tech person and if I can use it, anyone can.
