It figures...I got hooked on this stuff in Europe and now can't find it anywhere here. sigh
Not sure...the labels all said 'bitter lemon', and the bottler was Schweppes. There wasn't any alcohol in it, tho.
Margaret, they sell this at my regular grocery store (although I think it is Canada Dry brand). It is with the mixers like tonic water.
Altho Cadbury-Schweppes is a big mover in the U-S drink industry now (owning Dr.Pepper and 7-Up), you may find bitter lemon under its Canada Dry label...should be the same stuff. BTW, the only difference between tonic water and bitter lemon is the addition of the lemon flavouring. It's the quinine in both drinks that gives them their "bitter" taste. Both are holdovers from British colonial days when quinine was used to prevent malaria in India and other colonies. The amount of quinine used in sparkling water was much higher than today, and its bitterness inspired the British to mix it with lemon (non-alcoholic) and gin (gin and tonic) to try to kill the taste.
I like to put a teaspoon of Schweppes Bitter Lemon in water that tastes like chlorine, to cause the water to be more pleasant to drink. Schweppes Bitter Lemon, in small bottles, is for sale in the liquor department in some supermarkets (grocery stores) in the U.S.A. It is in supermarkets in my town in Missouri. The quinine in Schweppes bitter lemon is supposedly a cure for nausea.
