Hey Monte maybe we’ll see you before you take off but here are some of my observations. We’ve spent about a month in Überlingen over two trips and know the Überlingen to Bregenz side of the lake really well, but not by bike. We’ve spent a lot of time walking, riding the train and ferries between these locations. There is even a shortcut ferry that is put into use for cyclists to use during prime time to take off the little upper, right hand arm of the lake. The ferry is from Wallhausen to Überlingen.
- Überlingen itself is beautiful and worth a pause. There are 7 remaining wall towers, a beautiful lake promenade, informal and paid swim areas. From Überlingen it is a short ride to
- Birnau Kloster (large baroque pilgrimage church) in the vineyards with a beautiful restaurant and beach below to your right.
- Unteruldingen has a fascinating UNESCO rebuilt prehistoric pile village on its shore, you can’t miss it
- Meersburg is next with its castle, vineyards and cobbled streets on 2 levels
- Friedrichshafen is one of the largest towns on the east side of the lake and was heavily bombed during WWII. Look up and you’ll probably see a zeppelin in the air. Look ahead and you’ll see the zeppelin museum.
- Tettnang is worth a detour up the hill if you are there in September and the hops harvest is going on.
- Lindau now you are in a sliver of Bavaria that touches the lake so you’ll see a Biergarten or two. The vineyards from Meersburg changed to fruit tree orchards on your way to Lindau. The view of the Alps on the far side of the lake will hopefully be visible to you each day as you ride down this side.
- Bregenz AU is a little part of Austria that touches the lake. Be sure to see the sea stage, Seebühne, that has been built on the lake for this year’s opera. Also if you feel like an elevation change there is a lift near the town center that takes you up the mountain for better views of where you’ve been riding. Follow the footprints on the pavement to the lift.
- Swiss side is next back to Konstanz. I haven’t been on this side of the lake as much but there are several smaller towns to visit or pause in like Romanshorn.
I hope you have a great trip.
