Biggest competitor to World Nomads?

Biggest competitor to World Nomads?

My 1st question is who is the biggest competitor to World Nomads travel insurance?

The reason justifies my 2nd question, or problem?

World Nomads requires all customers currently traveling to hold Provincial heath insurance (from back home). In my case, Canada, and the province of British Columbia.

I don't want to go back there, and my provincial health insurance is expired. I have no insurance of any kind.

Do I have to contact BC insurance and tell them I need insurance again just to apply for World Nomad's international travel insurance, or can I find an equivalent to World Nomads that will allow me to open a policy (while on the road, and via the net), without the need of provincial insurance from back home.

I like World nOmads because they have an easy to use site, can make claims online, offer protection for the most important things (and then some), and because they offer renewable 6-month policies (good for me because I keep on traveling without the desire to return home).

So who to sign travel insurance with? I need to do this fast as I don't like the idea of globetrotting without insurance.

I believe that the B.C. medical plan requires that you be a resident of B.C., that is that you have been living in B.C. more than 6 months of the past year. If you have been you'd likely qualify for the subsidized rate, assuming you haven't been earning much income in B.C.

Unless you have a permanent place of residence, you're unlikely to qualify for travel health insurance. Most policies I've seen, Canadian and American, provide time-limited coverage to travellers before they leave home. World Nomad does offer insurance to residents of 150 countries...maybe you could apply for the country in which you're currently living, perhaps by setting up a new account with them.

My residence has always been BC, Canada. My parents live there, it's the address I use (for payments online), and all my information is connected there. I am still a resident, and citizen of Canada - I just don't live there anymore, and don't plan to in the near, or semi-distant future.

In fact, I'm not living anywhere - I just travel (hence the need for insurance).

If you haven't actually lived in BC for years, you're not a resident of BC, or of Canada for that matter. You may be a citizen of Canada, but you're definitely not a resident. As I said, you may want to try applying under a new account at World Nomad from wherever you happen to be right now.

No I am a resident of Canada, because I still file taxes, and the government send me GST cheques. I still use my Canadian address, so filing under a new country isn't possible (because I don't have my own address anywhere).

Kai....I'm sorry to keep repeating this, but you are not considered a resident of Canada. If you were, you wouldn't have seen your BC health insurance lapse. You can still pay Canadian taxes, but if you don't live in Canada any more, and you have no plans to return, you are simply not a resident of Canada. Period. You could always try to re-apply for BC insurance, telling them you really DO live at your parents' address...and just hope they don't check it out.

Only 3 weeks ago, they send a bill to my parent;s house asking me to pay for 3 years of insurance. I called them to ask about it, and they asked me where I've been for the last 3 years. I said abroad. They said ok, forget about the bill. I said, ok. They said your insurance in BC is now over. I was happy because I didn't have to pay the bill. Now, I'm stuck without travel insurance (and I need to find a reputable company that doesn't care about provincial health insurance). World Nomads says they can't help me without it.
